Indigenous Detox Support Workers Program

Provided by Native Courtworker and Counselling Association of BC

This outreach service coaches indigenous people with addictions on the skills needed to prevent continued addiction.
This service supports indigenous clients in partnership with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) Withdrawal Management Services (WMS). The client is connected to an Indigenous Detox Support Worker while attending detox. Clients exiting WMS are scheduled for an initial meeting with a support worker to develop a personalized Client Action Plan that reflects their individual needs.

The Client Action Plan consists of shelter or housing, food, laundry and showers as these are the basic issues that clients face after Detox. Secondary issues are connecting clients to Drug and Alcohol Counselling, AA Meetings, NA Meetings, and Sponsors. Clients who are in conflict with the law will be connected with Native Court workers.

Other services include:
  • Connection to appropriate community support agencies
  • Assistance in developing a client treatment and/or aftercare plan
  • Support in implementing treatment/aftercare plans (The wellness plans are holistic and appropriate to fit goals, severity, and readiness for change
  • Provision of assertive community treatment
  • Connection with other services as needed at each stage of the treatment/aftercare process
  • Opportunity to become part of client peer support and educational groups
  • Receiving on-going follow up and adjustment of plan as needed

In response to community inquiries, education on withdrawal management & follow-up support issues, training, and consultation to other professionals will be provided as needed.
