HealtheSteps™ - Free 6mo Virtual Lifestyle Coaching
Condition Specific Support, Public Health, and Social / Recreational
Provided by University of British Columbia (UBC)
- An evidence-based, community-focused, lifestyle prescription program
- For anyone wanting to improve their health behaviours and lower their risk for chronic disease
- Empowered by health technologies (such as the interactive mobile phone application) that support healthy living
Participants in the program receive individualized healthy living prescriptions for weekly exercise, daily step count, mindfulness and healthy eating. Participants are helped by an in-person or virtual coach to set healthy living plans and goals that are specific to them.
Usually the program runs for 6-8 months with the participant meeting their coach every other month to update their prescriptions and goals. In some cases participants have only required 2 or 3 visits with their coach to get them on track to a healthy lifestyle.
The first session is an introductory (baseline) session focusing on preparing the participants for the next 6 sessions over the next 6 months. The sessions are highly interactive, with the coach working with the participant to create prescriptions (Rx) in the areas of:
- Exercise Levels: By completing an innovative STEPTM Test, the coach and participant
will identify the participant’s personal fitness level and work towards improving this by increasing time spent doing moderate to vigorous activity.
- Physical Activity Levels: Participants will work towards increasing their daily step counts by small increments up to 10,000 steps/day.
- Healthy Eating: Using the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid and Canada’s Food Guide, participants will work towards meeting recommendations for healthy eating
- Mindfulness: Participants work through various mindfulness techniques with their coach to improve their mental and physical wellbeing.
Each session has evidence-based resources to support the participant making changes to their lifestyle. Patients interested in joining the program can contact the research team directly to join the program!
