Canada Pension Plan (CPP) Pensions

Provided by Government of Canada

Various Canadian public pensions for retirement, disabilities and the death of a spouse/common-law partner.
The following pensions are available:
  • Survivor's Pension: The survivor's pension is paid to the person who, at the time of death, is the legal spouse or common-law partner of the deceased contributor. If an individual is widowed more than once, only one survivor's pension - the larger - will be paid. The survivor is responsible for applying for the monthly pension. Individuals should apply as soon as possible after the contributor's death. If they delay, they may lose benefits. The Canada Pension Plan can only make back payments for up to 12 months. To apply, fill out the application and mail it in. More information about eligibility and details are available online.
  • Retirement Pension: The retirement pension is a monthly, taxable benefit that replaces part of an individual's income when they retire. If they qualify, they will receive the CPP retirement pension for the rest of their life. To qualify an individual must be at least 60 years old and have made at least one valid contribution to the CPP. Interested individuals must apply and should do so in advance of when they want the pension to start. More information about eligibility and general details are available online.
  • Disability Pension: The pension is a taxable monthly payment that is available to people who have contributed to the CPP and who are not able to work regularly because of a disability. To qualify a disability must be both "severe" and "prolonged," and it must prevent the individual from being able to work at any job on a regular basis. To apply fill out the application consisting of the application form and medical report. The application cannot be submitted electronically; it must be mailed in. More information about eligibility and general details are available online.
  • Guaranteed Income Supplement: The Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) provides a monthly non-taxable benefit to Old Age Security (OAS) pension recipients who have a low income and are living in Canada. Service Canada has implemented a process to automatically enroll seniors who are eligible to receive the GIS. Service Canada will send a notification letter the month after individuals turn 64. If an individual did not receive a letter from Service Canada informing them that they were selected for automatic enrolment, and they wish to start receiving an OAS pension and the GIS at age 65, they should apply for them right away. Individuals can apply online or by paper application. More information about eligibility and general information is available online.
