Addictions / Substance Use and Mental Health - Adult

- Screening, assessment and treatment planning.
- Referrals to the most appropriate service, team or community resource.
- Mental health and case management services are available for adults with severe and persistent mental illness through the Adult Community Support Services program. Clients may receive clinical case management, community based case management, outreach, medication clinic, psychiatrist to review lab results, counselling services, anger management, and/or anxiety groups. If not already involved with Duncan MHSU, referrals are accepted from primary care providers, psychiatrists, and other MHSU services (healthcare providers please see referral forms below).
- Connection to mental health and substance use services such as counselling, psychoeducational groups, and substance use recovery teams. This includes the Substance Use Integrated Team (SUIT) and Intensive Case Management Team (ICMT). Both are open to self referrals, and referrals from any community agency or primary care provider via the general Cowichan Valley MHSU intake process.
- Program is available for individuals aged 19+ years old who are living in the Cowichan Valley (top of the Malahat to Davis Road in Ladysmith)
- Psychiatrist consultations require a referral from a family physician or primary care provider
- Note: The psychiatric team does not accept referrals for ADHD or Autism assessments
Duncan Rapid Access Clinic (RAC)
A walk-in clinic offered through Mental Health and Substance Use. Adults can drop-in for a single session with a mental health and substance use clinician (non-psychiatry) and receive information regarding the most appropriate service.How to Access RAC Services
- No referral needed; walk-in appointments are available Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM or by calling Duncan RAC (250-709-3040).
- Same day appointments are not guaranteed.
- Individuals are seen based on the initial assessment and priority process.
- Note: Mental Health housing cannot be accessed through the Rapid Access Clinic.
Crisis and Emergency Services

RAC Duncan Hours of Operation: Monday to Friday, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM.
Note: Both services are closed on statutory holidays.
SUIT/ICMT teams are accessible 7 days a week from 8:30 AM - 7:30 PM. Look for staff wearing an orange jacket and/or a dark blue ball cap, both with an Island Health logo.
