Resilient Kids Group:
A once-a-week group for 8 to 13-year-olds that engages kids affected by parental mental health or addiction concerns in a variety of learning activities, games and social opportunities. Each group runs for 8 weeks. The groups usually occur 2 times a year (Spring and Fall). Groups are held during after school hours. Snacks are provided, and transportation to and from home may be arranged. This multi-week group offers opportunities to connect with others, learn ways to express emotions, and build new skills for kids living in families affected by parental mental health or addiction concerns. Eligibility: Resilient Kids Groups are open to Supporting Families clients who meet the following criteria:
- Ages 8 to 13 years old
- Affected by parental mental health or substance use
- Living or attending school in Richmond
- Whose family member has decided, in partnership with the Supporting Families Clinical Lead, that the group would be beneficial for the youth
Resilient Teen:
The Resilient Teens Group is a once-a-week group that engages youth affected by parental mental health or addiction concerns in a variety of learning activities, games and social opportunities. Each group runs for 6 weeks. The groups usually occur 2 times per year (Spring and Fall.) Groups are held during after school hours. Snacks are provided and transportation to and from home may be arranged. The groups are for older youth ages 13 – 18 years old who are affected by parental mental illness or addiction. The groups are led by trained facilitators who are either program staff or from local partnering organizations. This multi-week group offers opportunities to connect with others, learn ways to express emotions, and build new skills for teenagers living in families affected by parental mental health or addiction concerns. Parent Coaching Group:
Parent Coaching Group (formerly called Parent Education Group) is a once-a-week group that engages parents who are affected by mental health or addiction issues. The group covers a range of parenting skills-focused topics. Each group runs for 6-7 weeks. This group currently occurs once a year in the Winter. Groups are held during evening hours with refreshments and childminding provided. This multi-week group offers opportunities to learn new information and build new skills for parents who are affected by parental mental health or addiction issues. Click here to register.
Eligibility: Parent Coaching Groups are open to Supporting Families clients who meet the following criteria:
- Parents of children or youth aged 6 to 18
- Living or working in Richmond
Family Fun Nights:
Family Fun Nights offer opportunities for children, youth, and families to build social connections in the community and connect with program staff and community partners in more relaxed, activity-based settings…always with shared meals and games! Family Fun Nights usually occur on the second Friday of every third month (March, June, September and December) from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM and are held at various locations. These nights offer families the opportunity to engage with one another over shared food and activities. It offers families a time to relax and engage with others in the community. Short-Term Counselling & Systems Navigation:
The Supporting Families Program staff includes a Registered Clinical Counsellor who can offer short-term Individual or family-based counselling to determine which local service(s) may best suit a family’s needs. The Registered Clinical Counsellor will contact each family who is referred to the program to determine the family’s needs and what the program may offer.
Community Education:
Community Education Events are public talks to bring the community together to learn more about a topic that is relevant for the children, youth and families who are part of our program! Events may occur 2 times per calendar year. Presenters are often experts in areas related to child development, mental health and illness, parenting, etc. These nights offer community members the opportunity to learn more about a range of topics that are relevant to families affected by parental mental health or addiction concerns.
