Cardiac Rehabilitation and Prevention Clinic

Provides programming aimed at preventing and reducing heart and blood vessel diseases.
The Healthy Heart Program is for people who already have heart or blood vessel disease and for people who are at risk of getting these diseases. Patients participate in the program forabout six months.
Program components include:
  • Review your heart health with a cardiologist
  • Check your ability to exercise and carry out activities
  • Check your blood cholesterol
  • Check your risks for heart disease, get education about heart health, including smoking cessation
  • Have counseling about your diet
  • Receive a prescription for exercise
  • Be able to join support groups for depression and stress management

  • The Prevention Clinic is part of the Healthy Heart Program dedicated to preventing heart and blood vessel diseases as well as diabetes. The Prevention Clinic is also the main provincial clinic for people in British Columbia with inherited disorders of cholesterol and triglyceride metabolism. The Prevention Clinic incorporates multidisciplinary assessment and management (nurse educator, dietician, physician) of cardiovascular risk, inherited or other dyslipidemia, statin intolerance, known CVD, personal or family history of premature vascular disease, pre-diabetes, and smoking cessation.
    This Clinic diagnoses and treats disorders related to cholesterol metabolism:
  • Inherited or other dyslipidemias
  • Cardiovascular risk assessment
  • Statin or other lipid drug intolerance
  • Known coronary heart disease / stroke / TIA / PVD
  • Patients requiring high intensity lipid and prevention therapy to reduce risk
  • Unexplained premature vascular disease
  • Family history of severe / genetic dyslipidemia or premature vascular disease (men 55 or younger, women 65 or younger)
  • Pre-diabetes (IFG/IGT) or family history of diabetes
  • Smoking cessation

  • The Rehabilitation Clinic aimed at patients who have had a recent heart attack or bypass surgery or who have had a cardiac event or who are at risk of having a heart attack. The program is designed to provide a bridge between the hospital and the community. Rehabilitation is medically supervised for six months, after which patients graduate to a maintenance program. The program promotes cardiac health through education, counseling and exercise. Includes diet counseling, lipid management, education on smoking cessation, and stress management.
    Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at VGH is offered as an:

  • In Person Program (on-site at VGH or off-site at select community partner locations)
  • Virtual Cardiac Rehab (VCR) or Home-Based: To fully take advantage of the virtual cardiac rehab program, access to internet connection and computer/laptop/tablet recommended. Although telephone consultations available.
  • Hybrid Program: a combination of in-person and virtual program.

  • Program enrollment subject to program capacity, patient's medical intake assessment and preference.
    The Cardiac Rehabilitation is closed during the first week of August and the last week of the calendar year at St. Pauls Hospital.

    VGH location may have fees. Please contact our office regarding our program fee. In special circumstances, program fee may be waived.
