Kootenay Kids offers PT and OT services at no cost.

The Kootenay Kids Physiotherapist assesses movement, coordination, posture and strength and promotes a child’s development through play based assessment and intervention. The Physiotherapist may do some of the following:
  • Evaluate a child’s movements and abilities
  • Assess and help to promote a child’s motor development
  • Assess a child’s limb and postural alignment and advise on the need for bracing or orthotics
  • Check muscle tone and strength, range of motion, balance, postural reactions, movement patterns, body awareness and motor planning
  • Assess the need for specialized equipment
  • Provide recommendations on activities to help promote development
  • Provide information and education to community groups.

The Kootenay Kids Occupational Therapist helps children do tasks that they do in their daily lives such as work, play and self-care. To help the child to participate fully in daily activities, the occupational therapist may do some of the following:
  • Develop the child’s fine motor skills (e.g., scissor skills)
  • Change the materials used for a task (e.g., velcro shoes instead of laces)
  • Change the way a task is being done (e.g., breaking the task down into smaller steps)
  • Suggest changes to the environment (e.g., reducing visual distractions)
  • Educate the family and caregivers on suggestions and tools to help the child
