Afterschool Group Programs – Go Girls!, Game On and Explorations

Provided by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada

Group mentoring program for youth typically ages 10-13 that focuses on developing social skills, healthy decision making, mental and physical wellness and self-esteem.
Explorations Program:
The Explorations Program is an ideal setting for students to develop social skills, social engagement, and gain exposure to a variety of new activities and experiences in a small group setting with adult mentors that are screened and trained. Each after-school session is loosely structured around the three key Explorations themes of healthy decision-making skills, creating new and fulfilling relationships, and feeling good about oneself. Healthy snacks are provided each session.

The Explorations Program runs once a week, for 2 hours (usually 2:30-4:30pm), for 7-8 consecutive weeks. Group sessions take place on either a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, and are usually held in the school gym, or somewhere on the school site, where youth are able to enjoy a wide variety of activities, crafts, and games together. Groups are facilitated by a co-leadership model with mentors working in pairs, or groups of three, with a small group of youth (10-12 students) in grades 5-7. This group welcomes youth of all gender identities.

Go Girls Program:
Go Girls! is a group mentoring program for girls ages 12-14 that focuses on physical activity, balanced eating and self-esteem. The single, most important goal of the program is to positively shape the lives of young women and girls by helping them build a positive self-image – setting them on a path to reach their full potential in life.

The Go Girls! program consists of 7 mentoring sessions, held over a 7-10 week period, after school within school facilities. Each 1.5-2 hour-long session is loosely structured around four themes: physical activity, healthy eating, self-esteem, and communication skills.

Game On Program:
Game On! is a group mentoring program for providing boys and young men with information and support to make informed choices about a range of healthy lifestyle practices. Through non-traditional physical activities, complemented with healthy eating support, participants are engaged in life skills, communication, and emotional health discussions designed to engage participants in the pursuit of life-long healthy lifestyles.

Game On! includes seven 75-minute core sessions. There are also four extension modules that capture potential issues and topics specific to various locales and the interests of the mentors and participants.
