Canuck Place Children's Hospice (CPCH) - Vancouver & Abbotsford

Provided by Canuck Place Children's Hospice

Provides specialized, family-centered, pediatric palliative care, inpatient and outpatient / outreach services to children between the ages of 0-19 across British Columbia who are living with progressive, life-threatening illnesses
Inpatient services include 9 beds with 24-hour nursing care and physician coverage, providing medical respite care, supportive care, medical and nursing care, counselling, recreation therapy, management of complex pain, and symptoms and end of life.

Provides individual, family and group counselling to families of children with a progressive, life-limiting illness. Services are offered on an outpatient basis and include music and play therapy, spiritual counselling, social work, bereavement counselling and follow-up and support for grief and loss.

In addition to services provided in hospice, the clinical care team also delivers visiting and phone consultation services to healthcare providers and children and families who are at home or in a hospital.

Canuck Place is recognized as a Tier 4 specialty service in Pediatric Palliative Care, and the interdisciplinary team is the palliative care team at BC Children's Hospital and BC Women's Hospital.

Referrals to the CPCH program can be made by anyone, provided the child's parent / legal guardian has provided verbal consent to proceed with the referral.

Eligibility: Children accepted to Canuck Place are between the ages of 0-19 years of age. The important factor in acceptance to the program is the presence of a progressive, life-threatening illness.

Patient instructions: Once a child is accepted onto the Canuck Place program, an information package is sent to the family, including a Family Handbook and a letter with contact numbers to get in touch with the Intake Nurse. The family is also usually notified via a phone call. Prior to every child's in-patient admission, the family receives a pre-admission phone call to review the admission process and review the child's care.

Cancellation policy: A family can cancel their child's inpatient hospital admission at any time (as much notice as possible is appreciated).
