Settlement Support Services

Provided by Settlement Orientation Services (SOS)

This program helps newcomers learn about life in British Columbia, Canadian society, and local community services such as healthcare and education to support successful settlement in BC. Services are available in English and in participants’ first languages.
Provides first language support with all aspects of the refugee claim process, as well as general settlement services for refugee claimants.

Settlement services in detail:
  • Provides services in the local community.
  • Provide information on government public services (like medical care and schooling) and government rights and responsibilities.
  • Confidential support to help individuals and their families adjust to living in British Columbia.
  • Connect individuals to services and support in their local community.
  • Develop a settlement plan to meet their short- and long-term needs.
  • Help individuals gain confidence for their daily life in Canada.

To join the program, individuals must hold one of these statuses in Canada:
  • Permanent Resident (PR)
  • An Individual selected to become a Permanent Resident, and who has been informed by a letter from the IRCC
  • Protected Person, as defined in S.95 of Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protect Act (IRPA)
