Immigrant Support Services

Provided by Vancouver & Lower Mainland Multicultural Family Support Services (VLMFSS)

VLMFSS is non-profit organization offering free and confidential services to immigrant, visible minority, refugee and women without immigration status and their families who are experiencing family violence.
Multicultural Outreach/Stopping The Violence Program Provides services for women who are experiencing physical, psychological, emotional, financial abuse, sexual assault and any other offenses related to abusive relationships. We help them to develop coping skills, assist them in self-exploration and support them while they go through the different stages of rebuilding their lives. We help them to access the systems and we support them in their journey to find their own strength and renew their self-confidence, in a safe, non-judgmental and confidential environment.

Services offered:
  • Individual counselling, advocacy, and support at the office and/or over the phone to women experiencing any form of abuse/sexual assault/violence, provided by bi-lingual, bi-cultural workers
  • Group counselling and support
  • Counselling to women victims of any form of abuse
  • Crisis intervention and referrals to appropriate resources

Children And Caregivers We provide groups for children and their caregivers. These groups help children to develop their communication skills and foster their interest in developmentally appropriate activities and increase their social contacts. Caregivers explore community resources, learn how to promote healthy family relationships, and become aware of cross-cultural differences in parenting. Our individual and group counselling services focus on facilitating communication between family members, and between families and other agencies and institutions. The following two programs offer a variety of services for children and caregivers.

Community Action Program for Children and Caregivers (CAPC): Helps promote the healthy development of young children from birth to age 6 by improving parenting skills and parent-child relationships, decreasing social isolation, increasing child self-esteem and providing child-focused activities, such as children programs and playgroups. Programs to address these include the following:
  • Parenting classes and drop-in groups
  • Child health and development activities
  • Outreach and counselling programs
  • Specialized programs, such as support for mothers dealing with domestic abuse
Trauma Counselling for Children Affected by Family Violence (PEACE): The PEACE program stands for Prevention, Education, Advocacy, Counselling, and Empowerment. It's available to children and youth ages 3 – 18, who have been exposed to domestic violence. This program focuses on improving the child/youth’s emotional health and self-esteem and strives to:
  • Teach them about the types of abuse and express their feelings and thoughts about violence in order to understand that family violence is not their fault
  • Help them develop problem-solving skills and the ability to follow a safe plan
  • Help children work through their feelings that surface as a result of family violence, in a safe and confidential environment

Community Based Victim Services:
  • Ongoing emotional support throughout the process
  • Accessing and navigating the system
  • Court preparation and accompaniment
  • Liaison with lawyers/Crown Counsel
