Urban Indigenous Health and Healing Cooperative - Mental health, social, and traditional healing programs

Provided by Urban Indigenous Health and Healing Cooperative (UIHHC)

UIHHC offers various health and wellness programs.
Programs offered include:

Cultural Programming: Relationship-based care that honours physical, mental, emotional and spiritual healing. Our Elders and Knowledge-Keepers support the development of a positive identity and a connection to Indigenous teachings, medicines, songs and culture through a connection that is non-judgmental and grounded in compassion.

Primary Care: Offers team-based, comprehensive and culturally informed healthcare services, in order to provide health equity for people on the DTES. The physicians and nurses focus on HIV management, Opioid agonist therapy (OAT), and other chronic conditions such as COPD, Diabetes and Hepatitis C. Additionally, the mental health counsellor and Indigenous Elders offer one-on-one counselling regarding any physical, emotional, mental or spiritual concerns our members are dealing with.

Mobile Outreach Program (MOP): Offers a combination of scheduled drop-in clinics, targeted outreach for individual MOP members, and Cultural Wellness outreach services.

Case Management: Provides daily support and outreach to our members most at risk of “falling through the cracks” in the health system. Support includes medication outreach visits with members, food security deliveries, as well as case management.

Food and Nutrition Service: Offers daily breakfast, snacks and a hot lunch for members.

Education and Training: A training site for the family practice residents within UBC’s Aboriginal Family Practice Residency program. The program looks to introduce residents to the unique strengths of Aboriginal people arising from their culture and community and any specific health challenges that may exist in the community. The centre serves as an educational environment for students enrolled in many health and social services programmes.

The DUDES Club: Facilitates a participant-led community for male members' wellness, which prioritizes supportive relationships, engagement in health care, and Indigenous world views.
